The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar recently organized a seminar as part of the Amrit Kaal Vimarsh-Vikasit Bharat @2047 initiative. The seminar, titled ‘How long is the long path for a developed India’, took place on November 17th, 2023. Renowned Nuclear Physicist, Padma Bhushan Prof. V.S. Ramamurthy, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and shared insights on the subject.
Prof. Ramamurthy highlighted that after breaking free from centuries of colonial rule seventy-five years ago, India not only adopted democracy but also emphasized science and technology for development. While India has made significant progress in these fields, the country’s economy still reflects characteristics of a developing nation. The speaker argued that recent interventions in higher education, research, and technology-driven entrepreneurship have the potential to make India’s dream of becoming a developed nation by 2047 more achievable.
Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar, emphasized the crucial role of higher education institutions in India’s development process. He stated that these institutions are redefining the education system and contributing to the growth of research and development. He also discussed IIT Bhubaneswar’s involvement in various government programs aimed at nation-building and promoting efforts towards making India a developed country.
Prof. Karmalkar highlighted some of the initiatives of IIT Bhubaneswar, including the launch of a 4-year B.Sc.-B.Ed. Integrated Teacher Education Program and steps being taken towards introducing a course on research and innovation. He stressed the importance of fostering entrepreneurship in science and technology and noted that IIT Bhubaneswar is actively encouraging students to embark on entrepreneurial paths to contribute to India’s economic development.
The seminar was attended by distinguished personalities, including directors and registrars of prestigious institutes like Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), and Institute of Physics Bhubaneswar. Dr. Vijayakrishna Kari, Professor-in-Charge of the seminar, coordinated the event.
Overall, the seminar shed light on the challenges and opportunities faced by India in its journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047, showcasing the efforts and strategies being implemented by IIT Bhubaneswar and other institutions in achieving this goal.
